DHAKA: The government on Thursday (June 2) proposed a Tk 340,605 crore budget for 2016-17, fixing the target of attaining a higher GDP growth of 7.2 percent in the financial year.

Finance Minister AMA Muhith proposed the budget with Tk 97,853-crore deficit which is five percent of GDP (Tk 1,961,017-crore).

Of the deficit, Tk. 36,305 crore (1.9 percent of GDP) will be financed from the external sources and Tk. 61,548 crore (3.1 percent of GDP) from the domestic sources.

Of the domestic financing, Tk. 38,938 crore (2.2 percent of GDP) will come from the banking system.

The finance minister placed the 45th national budget in parliament, expressing his hopes to be able to steer the economy out of the ensuing problems.

Muhith started giving his budget speech titled “Marching towards Growth, Development and Equitable Society” at 3:40pm.

The revenue target of the budget has been fixed at Tk 242,752 crore.

Of the revenue, Tk 203,152 crore is expected from NBR tax revenue, Tk 7,250 crore from non-NBR tax revenue and Tk 32,350 crore from non-tax receipt.

Earlier in the day, the cabinet in a meeting at Sangsad Bhaban chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina approved the budget, which is about 17.40 percent bigger than that of 2015-16 Fiscal Year.

Muhith placed the budget in the House through power-point presentation, with Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.
