Tannery owner to pay fine Tk 10000 a day

DHAKA: The appellate division of the Supreme Court (SC) on Monday (July 18) decreased the amount of fine to be paid by the owners of 154 tanneries daily for delayed shifting of their tanneries from city’s Hazaribagh area to Savar.

The court fixed Tk 10,000 instead of Tk 50,000 as fine for everyday.

The court also ordered to pay half of money to be acquired from the tannery owners to the National Liver Foundation of Bangladesh (NLFB).

A four-member bench, led by chief justice (CJ) Surendra Kumar Sinha pronounced the order in the morning.

Barrister Fazle Nur Tapos and Barrister Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury moved for the tannery owners in the court while Advocate Manzil Murshid was the writ petitioner.

Earlier on June 16, an HC bench comprising Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husain and Justice AKM Shahidul Huq gave verdict saying owners of 154 tanneries has to pay Tk 50,000 daily as fine till they relocate those to Savar following a petition of lawyer Manzill Murshid.
