DHAKA: The new building of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) is going to be constructed at Sector-17 of Uttara in the city.
A high official of the BGMEA told Banglanews that the BGMEA authorities had been searching land to build the new building following the apex court’s full verdict to knock down the building within 6 months. The authorities chose Uttara, as the place is near from the airport, he added.
A land of 10 katha at Uttara has been selected for relocation of the BGMEA building. However, price of the land has not been finalized till now, said the BGMEA officials.
The legal process to purchase the land will be completed this month. The authorities hope that they can begin the construction work in April.
When contacted, BGMEA president Siddikur Rahman was reluctant to make any comment about the proposed new building.
However, he said, “The court gave us six months time to demolish the current building. We will leave the area and demolish the building within the timeframe as per directive of the court.”
Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Sunday (March 12) morning made a six months timeframe to demolish the BGMEA building, constructed at Hatirjheel Lake area of city, following a petition of the BGMEA authorities.
Earlier on 9 March, BGMEA lawyer Kamrul Haque Siddiqui filed the petition seeking three years’ time for demolishing the building.
Meanwhile, the BGMEA leaders held an internal meeting on Sunday on the issue of construction of new building. The leaders are still now thinking to find out any way to save the building, said a source of the meeting.
