DHAKA: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court stayed the High Court order against the decision of National Board of Revenue (NBR) to freeze the bank account of mobile operator Robi Axiata Ltd on accusation of evading Value Added Tax (VAT).

Consequently, the reasoning of NBR to freeze the bank accounts will remain effective, said lawyers on Thursday (March 1).

An appellate bench led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain stayed the HC order for three days, responding a plea from the state.

Deputy Attorney General SM Moniruzzaman moved for the state while Barrister Tanjib Ul Alam moved for Robi, at the courtroom.

The NBR on February 26 froze the bank account of Robi, the country's second largest mobile operator, on allegations of dodging of Tk 18.72 crore in value-added tax and supplementary duty.

On February 27, the HC stayed the NBR’s decision to freeze the bank account, responding a writ petition.
