DHAKA: Indian High Commissioner to Dhaka Harsh Vardhan Shringla disagreed with the news claiming Bangladesh the fourth largest remittance source for India.
He termed the news ‘totally incorrect’.
He was delivering speech as special guest at the opening ceremony of an international exhibition on textile at the International Convention City Bashundhara (ICCB) Wednesday (September 12).
Earlier, Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) President Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin said at the program: “Bangladesh is the fourth largest source of remittance for India. We are proud of this.”
The Indian High Commissioner opposed the remark made by Mohiuddin.
“The information given by Mr Mohiuddin on the Bangladeshi remittance earned by India is totally incorrect,” Shringla said.
“I don’t know from where you (Mohiuddin) got the information. Forward it to the high-commission, if you had the relatable information,” he further said.
In July, a news outlet published a news saying Bangladesh the 4th largest remittance source of India. The item went viral as netizens took to social media sites to share the record.
As per the World Bank report, India earns highest remittance from United Arab Emirates.
Washington DC based Pew Research Center says Bangladesh is 25th largest source for India in this regard.
