DHAKA: State Minister for Labour and Employment Begum Munnujan Sufian said technical assistance has been sought from the European Union (EU) in other sectors alongside the ready-made garments to create new employment opportunities.

In the meeting with an EU delegation, they also assured us that it will continue cooperation and enhance collaboration in the future, she added.

Munnujan Sufian also hoped that not only in the garment sector, but also EU cooperation will increase in other sectors.

A team of European Union, led by its Head of Delegation and Ambassador to Bangladesh Rensje Teerink, called on the new State Minister for Labor and Employment at latter’s office at Bangladesh secretariat on Sunday (Jan 27).

After the meeting, Begum Munnujan Sufian said “The EU is eager to work in all sectors of Bangladesh, including readymade garments. That's why we sought technical assistance from them for creating jobs and developing other sectors. Our discussion has been fruitful”.

The EU Ambassador Teerink praised the government for speedy solution of workers’ unrest ensued over wage structure and releasing the gazette quickly.

“We have told the delegation that for the garment sector, 29 committees have been formed in the labor-intensive areas so that such situation is not created in future. They will regularly monitor this sector. Besides, a 5-digit hotline is going to launch for workers to receive their complaints directly”, she added. 

During the time, Afroza Khan, Secretary of Ministry of Labour and Employment (MoLE), Abu Syed Belal, trade adviser to the EU delegation were, among others, present at the meeting.
