Japan keen to invest in Bangladesh agro industry

DHAKA: Japan wants to invest in agricultural marketing apart from promoting food processing in Bangladesh, said Japanese ambassador to Bangladesh Hiroyasu Izumi.

“Since independence, Japan is beside Bangladesh in infrastructure development. Japan now wants to work for agricultural development of Bangladesh,” said Hiroyasu Izumi.

The Japanese envoy had a meeting with Agriculture Minister Dr Md Abdur Razzaque at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Thursday (February 14).

The Agriculture Minister said “Japan has invested in Bangladesh, built partnerships with the country and strengthened the friendly relations. Japan is not only an important development partner of Bangladesh, but the two countries are cooperating with each other in the international arena.”

“Bangladesh will get Japanese cooperation in the development of agriculture, food processing, value add in agricultural products and solar irrigation and training and infrastructure,” said the Japanese envoy.

“Our poultry industry now turned around, though the price is insufficient. There are some problems in entering the international market. Our production of milk, vegetables and fruits are also good. But farmers do not get fair price in the local market and difficult to enter the international market because there is no conservation and processing system,” said the minister.

“Our maize production is also good but we have to import maize for poultry industry because there is no conservation and processing system for locally-produced maize. Asked, Japan has promised to cooperate in this regard” Dr Md Abdur Razzaque further said.

Like in the past, Japan will continue its cooperation in all sectors of Bangladesh, said the Japan ambassador.
