HC summons 2 CEOs of Dhaka’s city corporations

DHAKA: The High Court (HC) summoned two Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of Dhaka north and south city corporations to provide explanation on the report they submitted on city’s air pollution following an HC order.

The HC bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader also ruled that two officials are to explain it before the court on May 15 on Sunday (May 5).

Advocate Manjil Morshed moved for the petition while deputy attorney general Abdullah Al Mahmud Bashar stood for the state and advocate Nurunnahar Akhter (Nupur) was on behalf of city corporations.

Based on reports of Dhaka’s air pollution published in mass media on January 21, rights group Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) filed a writ petition.

The HC gave an order along with a rule on January 28. 

The court asked two chief executive officers of the two city corporations and director general of Department of Environment to comply with the order and submit a report on this by 15 days.

Besides, two mayors and two chief executive officers were asked to sprinkle water, in the areas which are under construction or repair work or prone to dust, twice in every 48 hours.
