RAJSHAHI: Rajshahi Mango is no doubt the best one. It is famous all over the country. Besides, the mangoes of that region are being exported to a number of countries after fulfilling the local demand.
Rajshahi district administration has been fixed deadline for mango harvesting from the trees for three years in a bid to provide chemical-free mangos among countrymen.
Due to the ongoing spells of heat wave, the mangoes are being ripened quickly few days ahead of month of Joystya. So, mango harvest in Rajshahi will begin from Wednesday (May 15).
Zillur Rahman, businessman and businessman of Moni village in Bagha upazila of Rajshahi, told Banglanews that usually at beginning of Joystya (Madhumas) mango start to get ripe in Rajshahi.
Alim Uddin, Chief Scientific Officer of Rajshahi Fruit Research Center, told Banglanews, "Guti mangos get ripe a little earlier every year. There was no exception to this year. So many people will start to harvest Guti mango. Besides, as per the time of fixed by district administration, farmers will be able to harvest mangos in seven phases. There is no danger of damage”.
In a special meeting, held on Sunday (May 13) at the office of deputy commissioner’s conference room, district administration decided that the first phase of harvesting will be of Guti mango from May 15.
Of the other species of mangos, Gopalbhog will be harvested on May 20, Ranipasand and Laxmanbhog on May 25, Khirsapat or Himsagar on May 28, Langra on June 6, Amrapali, Fazli and Surma Fazli on June 16, and Ashwina varieties on July 17, as per decision taken in the meeting.
Shamsul Haque, Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension of Rajshahi, said that in the current season, Department of Agricultural Extension has set the mango production target about 18 lakh metric tonnes in Rajshahi.
If the heat wave comes down and there is no new natural disaster, the target will hopefully be achieved, the official added.
