DHAKA: Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun said out of one crore pieces of rawhides, only 10,000 pieces damaged this year.
He said this while holding a tripartite meeting of the government, tannery owners, warehouse owners and other rawhide-related personalities at the ministry on Sunday (August 18).
Saying that there are no problems in leather industries, he said not many rawhides were damaged. He attributed the damage of 10000 pieces of rawhides to hot temperature this year.
The minister said policy is being formulated regarding rawhide. This issue will be resolved through mediation of FBCCI by the 22 (August). It is customary, there is not such a problem. Today all is resolved. The crisis in the leather industry has been due to seasonal traders. They are trying to misguide businessmen including the media in various ways.
Asked about the export of leather, he said the decision would be taken considering the situation. It's a raw material. Export is a matter of process. The government will export if it deems necessary. However, it will be decided whether to export or not, depending on the situation.
Private Industry and Investment Adviser to Prime Minister Salman F Rahman, Vice President of Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) Siddiqur Rahman, state minister for industries Kamal Ahmed Majumder were present among others.
