 5-week Jamdani fest kicks off Sept 6

DHAKA: A five-week Jamdani Festival is going to kick off at Bengal Shilpalay in the capital city on Friday (September 6).  

Bangladesh Jatiya Karushilpa Parishad, or National Crafts Council of Bangladesh (NCCB), is organising the fest in collaboration with the Bengal Foundation. 

The event will highlight and celebrate Jamdani, and commemorate the hard work of artisans who have nurtured and kept this tradition alive for centuries.

Five major crafts organizations, including Aarong, Aranya, Kumudini, and Tangail Saree Kutir, will showcase their products in the fest.

The Jamdani festival will be inaugurated at 5 pm on Friday. The exhibition will remain open from 12 noon to 8pm daily. However, there will be a weekly holiday on Sunday. Details can be found on the websitewww.jamdanifestival.com.

The new Jamdani sarees are being brought to the exhibition for showcasing expertise and production capabilities by the successors of Jamdani craftsmen. 

n this case, the traditional jamadani has been done collecting. It took 640 weeks for making the 80 sarees for the exhibition. In making these sarees, 45 master weavers and 56 co-weavers have worked.

During the festival, an international seminar will be held on Saturday (September 7) where local and foreign experts are expected to participate.

Presidents of Bangladesh Craft Council Rafiqul Islam, Tanti Abul Kasem, Aarong's representative Ashraful Alam and women entrepreneur Monira Emdad were present at the press conference.

Speakers at the press conference said the government help needed in preserving the Jamdani tradition. Financial incentives should also be given for this.
