DHAKA: Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon said that if anyone wants to destabilize the onion market by hiking prices or selling more than the government-fixed price.
He came up with the warning note while talking to reporters during visit to Palashi Bazar in the capital on Wednesday (Oct 2).
At the time, he said, the market of the daily essentials is normal. However, the onion price is slightly higher, but it will return to normal in a short time.
The DSCC mayor also said that onions should be sold at the government-fixed prices. If someone takes a higher price from the consumers, then the mobile court will launch drive against the unscrupulous businessmen from today and take action against them in the South City Corporation.
"If any wholesaler has stocked onions, we will take legal action against him. His warehouse will be sealed if needed," the mayor said.
He further said, “We have undertaken strong monitoring arrangements so that no one can destabilize the market.”
Sayeed Khokon said that all the traders will have to sell these onions at a fixed price from the Ministry of Commerce.
According to the fixed price, the local onion wholesalers will sell at the price of Tk 80 to Tk 90 and the retailers will sell it at the price of Tk 96 to Tk 108. If anyone takes higher than this, action will be taken.
Urging consumers to buy as much as they need daily, the mayor also said that supply is normal. So no one will take pressure through buying extra onions.
