SYLHET: Onions are being sold at Taka 130 in the open markets of Sylhet amid ongoing crisis of this essential commodity countrywide.
However, the price has soared up to Taka 150 in countryside areas.
Traders said the price is likely to reach as much as Taka 200 in 1/2 days. Though, it was sold at Taka 80 in the open markets about 2 days ago.
General buyers are in a panic about the sudden rise of the price, blaming a syndicate for it.
“Price increases based on demand and supply. The government did not set onion prices. A businessman can profit Taka 4/5 on onions,” Jahangir Alam, Assistant Director of Consumers’ Right Protection of Sylhet told Banglanews.
It has been found out that only 15 businessmen control onion markets in Sylhet.
Deputy Commissioner M Kazi Emdadul Islam was contacted over phone; regarding what steps could be taken, but he disconnected the phone calls.
