The government imposed a two-month ban on fishing, starting from Monday, in major five hilsa sanctuaries of the country in a bid to protect Hilsa fry.
Public relations officer of the ministry concerned Md Iftekhar Hossain came up with this information on Sunday.
The fishing, including Hilsa, will remain banned at the Hilsa sanctuaries of Barishal, Chandpur, Laxmipur, Bhola, Shariatpur and Patuakhali.
All kinds of fishing are banned in the months of March and April every year in the Hilsa sanctuaries of the country. This time, fishing in those places is a punishable offence. Violators will face punishment with at least one to maximum two years rigorous imprisonment or a fine of up to Tk 5,000 or both.
