Commerce Secretary Tapan Kanti Ghosh on Monday feared that the prices of onion in the market may not be declined within the next one month.

He said, "The onion prices may decline in last week of November as new onions will come in the markets." 

The secretary came up with the remark while talking to media at the secretariat today (Oct 11).

He, however, said eighty per cent of onions in the markets are produced in the country while 20 per cent are imported from India and some from Myanmar. 

As onions are being sold at high price in India's Bangalore due to rain, onion traders in Bangladesh have hiked the price, he added.

The prices of sugar and oil in the markets have also been continuing at high rates, he said, adding the prices may decline soon as the government started taking measures in this regard.

"Letters have already been sent to authorities concerned. Besides, NBR has been asked to withdraw tax," Tapan Kanti Ghosh added.

Regarding TCB, the secretary said, "Onions are being sold at Tk 30 per kg on 400 trucks every day. Around 150 tons of onions are being sold daily. In order to increase the volume, 15,000 tons of onions are being imported from Turkey."
