A cross-section of people of Chattogram on Saturday strongly condemned the attempt to kill Bashundhara Group Managing Director (MD) Sayem Sobhan Anvir, saying it might have been aimed at hindering the country’s progress.
They demanded immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the masterminds of the murder plot and their expulsion from the party.
As the name of Whip Shamsul Haque Chowdhury surfaced over the incident, the people of Chattogram termed it a matter of shame.
After the news of the attempt on the life of the Bashundhara Group MD spread, people from different sections, including politicians and business leaders, started lodging their protests.
Central Jubo League Joint Secretary Muhammad Badiul Alam said nobody is above the law and those behind the conspiracies must be punished. “The law will take its own course and the truth will be revealed in investigation by the law enforcement agencies.”
“It’s shameful for the Jatiya Sangsad that the name of a whip has surfaced in this connection,” he said.
Chattogram city Awami League leader and Chattogram Abahani Limited founding General Secretary Didarul Alam Chowdhury said the whip and his son have long been involved in different criminal activities. “The attempt to assassinate the MD of a leading business group is heinous.”
If police find their involvement during investigation, criminal cases should be filed against them to bring them to justice, he said.
“Exemplary punishment should be meted out to them so that no one dares to do so in future,” said the AL leader.
Besides, organisational action should be taken for committing the wrongdoing after holding an important post of a party like Awami League, he added.
Several business leaders in Chattogram, preferring not to be named, said the attempt on the life of a top industrialist of the country is tantamount to attempting to stop the economic wheels.
The incident will surely scare other industrialists and investors, leaving a negative impact on the economy, they observed.
The business leaders also demanded stern action from the government in this connection.
