Speakers at a programme in Rangpur on Friday said the jewellery industry will regain its lost glory under the leadership of Bangladesh Jewellers Samity (BAJUS) President Sayem Sobhan Anvir.
They made the remarks while addressing the Rangpur Divisional Representatives’ Meeting-2022 of BAJUS at a local hotel.
The speakers said Bashundhara Group Managing Director and BAJUS President Sayem Sobhan Anvir has taken a Tk-12,000 crore project where imported liquid gold will be refined and exported in the form of biscuits (bars) and gold ornaments after meeting the local demand.
Former BAJUS President Dr Dilip Kumar Roy was the chief guest at the programme held with President of BAJUS Rangpur unit Enamul Haque Sohel in the chair.
In his speech, Dr Dilip Roy said, “Bangladesh Jewellers Samity is a proud and prosperous organisation. And the art of jewellery has its roots in the traditional history and culture of Bangalees.”
He also said the country’s jewellery industry was once in a fragile state and the rich history of the industry had faded away. “Therefore at one stage, we requested Sayem Sobhan Anvir, an icon of the country’s businessmen and a prominent and prudent business leader, to take charge of the organisation. Responding to our call, he has come forward and is taking new steps to revive the industry.”
“Sayem Sobhan Anvir has taken a liquid gold refinery project at a cost of around Tk 12,000 crore. Being organised under his leadership, we’ll regain our lost glory and take the country’s gold market before the world,” Dr Dilip Roy added.
Apart from setting up a gold bank, gold traders will be made self-reliant and given loans, he said, adding that plans have also been made to develop skilled workers.
The former BAJUS president said it will be better for both the artisans and owners if the artisans are made skilled through training.
“Gold village will be built where the artisans will work in a healthy environment,” he said, adding that a jewellery fair will be organised in Dhaka on March 17, marking the birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
While addressing the programme as a special guest, BAJUS Vice-President Anwar Hossain said it is more complicated to become a successful businessman than attaining success in politics or any other sector. “The current BAJUS president is a skilled organiser. He has planned to unite the jewellery businessmen and reach them to the global stage. Being organised, we all need to strengthen his hands. If we want to save ourselves from any evil force, we have to be a member of this organisation,” he said.
BAJUS Vice-President Dr Dewan Aminul Islam said, “We’ll take membership of BAJUS for the sake of ourselves. This will save us from unnecessary harassment. BAJUS will resist the frowning of any vested quarter to protect us.”
While delivering his speech as the president of the meeting, BAJUS Rangpur chapter President Enamul Haque Sohel said they want to remain united and change the history of the jewellery industry together.
“Our new leader, the country’s business icon Sayem Sobhan Anvir, has announced the establishment of a gold bank. He is planning to refine liquid gold and export it abroad. We’ll extend our hands for implementing these plans,” he said.
BAJUS Member Secretary of Media and Communication and Social Affairs Mizanur Rahman Manik, its Member Secretary of Monitoring of District Organisation Joynal Abedin Khokon, and Member Secretary of Law and Membership Reponul Hasan also spoke on the occasion.
BAJUS Rangpur unit General Secretary Aminul Islam Raju, Dinajpur unit President Mofazzal Hossain and its General Secretary Mokleshar Rahman, Lalmonirhat chapter President Himanshu Sarkar and its General Secretary Dulal Chandra Karmakar, and Nilphamari unit President Shamsul Alam and its General Secretary Abdul Karim addressed the function.
