The students of Brac University were attacked by police while staging demonstrations and chanting slogans in front of their campus in the Merul Badda area of Dhaka.
Many students were injured as police beat them.
At one stage, students entered the Brac University campus and police followed them to charge batons at students and tear gas inside the private university campus.
Earlier at 11:00am, students of Brac University took to the Badda-Rampura road and blocked vehicle movement there.
Upon hearing the news, students of North South University (NSU), American International University of Bangladesh (AIUB) and other universities were also rushing towards the Brac University to join agitating students.
In the face of the students' counterattack, many police members took shelter in the Canadian International University building.
Organisers said that the students of United International University (UIU) and East-West University (EWU) were waiting to join the protest.
A tense situation was prevailing in the area.
