Why not Halassemia information in NID: HC rule

The High Court on Sunday (Aug 7) issued a rule asking the concerned authorities why it should not be added to the National Identity (NID) Card whether a person is a thalassemia carrier.

At the same time, it has been asked to know why a rule should not be issued to formulate policy guidelines for Thalassemia patients.

The concerned have been asked to respond to the rule within a month.High Court's ruling on the question why thalassemia information is not with NID.

A High Court division bench consisting of Justice Md Mojibur Rahman Mia and Justice Md IzarulHaque Akand gave this order after hearing a writ in this regard.

Advocate Yunus Ali Akand pleaded on behalf of the writ in the court while Deputy Attorney General (DAG) Arvind Kumar Roy was on the government side.

The Cabinet Secretary, Health Secretary, Law Secretary, Home Secretary, Election Commission (EC), Director General (DG) of the Directorate of Health Services, Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council have been asked to respond to the rule.

The writ was filed on May 31 by lawyer Yunus Ali Akand, before this, he sent a legal notice on the matter on May 25.

The legal notice has asked to take necessary steps to protect people from the sufferings of this disease.

If a thalassemia carrier marries another thalassemia carrier, their child has a higher risk of developing thalassemia, the notice said.

For this reason, it will be possible to easily prevent thalassemia by stopping to carriers to marry if such information is included in the NID Card, said the writ petitioner Advocate Yunus Ali.
