DHAKA: The Nation will observe the Shaheed (martyred) Noor Hossain Day Sunday commemorating the supreme sacrifice of the pro- democratic activist, who laid down his life to overthrow the then autocratic regime of Hossain Mohammad Ershad.
On this day in 1987, Noor Hossain was killed in police firing near Zero point in the city while participating in a pro-democracy procession. His death ultimately expedited the fall of Ershad regime and paving the way to restore democracy in the country.

Awami League, its associate bodies and other political and socio-cultural organizations chalked out elaborate programmes to mark the day.
Awami League will place wreaths at Noor Hossain Square at 7:30am.
In a statement on Saturday, Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam urged all to observe the day in a befitting manner.
