Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has issued a warning for potentially extreme rainfall across six divisions, including the capital Dhaka, with a heightened risk of landslides in hilly areas of the Chattogram region.
According to a forecast released on Sunday (Sept 14), the active southwest monsoon system is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall — ranging from 44mm to over 88mm in 24 hours — in parts of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions. The alert remains in effect until 9am on Tuesday (Sept 17).
Meteorologist AKM Nazmul Haque confirmed that the intensity of the downpour could trigger landslides in the hilly terrain of the Chattogram division.
The heavy rainfall may also cause temporary waterlogging in some low-lying areas of Dhaka and Chattogram metropolitan cities, the department added.
