A youth was held on Friday for allegedly attempting to go to Singapore through an empty container from Chattogram Port.
The detainee was identified as Md Liton Mollah, 23, son of Md Faruk Mollah of Sreepur upazila under Magura district. He is a truck driver by profession.
He was handed over to the Bandar police station on Friday and a case was filed in this connection.
Sources said Liton entered the port jetty through CCT-2 Gate using his valid driving license and other documents on September 24.
He climbed on the deck of a ship ‘MV Haian View’ by staircase on the backside and entered an empty container.
When the ship reached the deep sea, he stepped out of the empty container out of hunger and thirst, they said.
Bandar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sanjoy Kumar Sinha confirmed the matter.
According to him, Liton was caught by the crewmembers of the ship and taken to the Singapore port. Later, he was brought back during the return trip of the ship and handed over to Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) on Thursday afternoon.
The CPA Security Department Inspector Nasir Uddin Ahmed filed a case in this connection and handed over Liton to police on Friday, the OC said.
