12 cops among 47 hurt in Madaripur clash

At least 12 members of the police and 35 civilians were injured after a clash between two groups ensued over dominance in Madaripur on Thursday (January 11). 

At this time, incidents like vandalizing, looting houses, and half a hundred cocktail explosions took place.

However, the police brought the situation under control by firing blank shots. Seven people including a ward councilor of the municipality have been arrested in this incident.

Of the injured, six people identified as Inspector (Operation) of Madaripur Sadar Model Police Station, Salim Sardar, Sub-Inspector (SI) Rabiul Islam, ASI Masud Bepari, Constable Manowar Hossain, Asad Chowkidar, 40, and Tamim Mridha, 17, of Charkhagadi area.

According to locals, On Wednesday, Simanto Bepari mistakenly pushed Ashik Mridha with bike while going to local market. To solve the matter arbitration was formed, where Mizan Mridha's son Sajal Mridha beat up Ratul Bepari, son of Monu Bepari. 

When the beating news was spread Mridha and Bepari families people got tangled into a clash, locals said.

The locals also said additional police have been deployed to avoid untoward situation. The victims have demanded justice in this incident.

Inspector (Operation) of Madaripur Sadar Model Police Station Salim Sardar said that the police went to the spot to stop the clash. Just then, both sides started throwing stones at the police. Several policemen were injured. Later the situation was brought under control by firing blank shots.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Madaripur Sadar Model Police Station AHS Salauddin said seven people, including Ward Councilor No. 8 of Madaripur Municipality Abul Bashar Bepari, have been arrested in connection with the clash.

All those who were directly involved in this incident will be brought under the law, he added.
