A Joypurhat court today (Feb 29) sentenced nine people to life imprisonment for killing a day laborer at Sadar Upazila in the district in 2013. 

Besides, the court also fined them Tk 50,000 each, in default of payment, they will have to suffer more two years in prison.

Joypurhat Additional Sessions First Court Judge Md Nurul Islam passed the verdict this morning.

The convicts were Abdur Rauf, Ruhul Amin, Ali Hossain, Khokon Hossain, Belal Hossain, Rokon Hossain, Babu Hossain, Mizanur Rahman and Sirajul Islam, residents of Dharki Sotahar village under Joypurhat Sadar Upazila.

At that time, two person named Sanwar Hossain and Ketabbar Hossain were acquitted as the allegation was not proved against them.

Advocate Nripendranath Mondal, public prosecutor of the court, confirmed the matter.

According to the case statement, on November 1, 2013, some agricultural laborers, including the victim Nurul Haque, were harvesting paddy in a land of Aman Ullah, a businessman of Hichmi Bazar. At that time, 13 people including Abdur Rauf and 8/10 other unknown persons attacked them with weapons due to a previous enmity over land.

Nurul Haque later died at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College (SHJMEC) Hospital in Bogura.

In the incident, the victim's son filed a murder case with Joypurhat Sadar Police Station.
