Blitz editor Shoyeb gets 7-yr jail

DHAKA: A Dhaka court on Thursday awarded seven years imprisonment to Salauddin Shoyeb Chowdhury, editor of the Weekly Blitz, in a sedition case.

Metropolitan session judge Md Jahrul Haque passed the order with the presence of Shoyeb Chowdhury.

As per the statement of the case filed on Januray 14, 2004 police arrested Shoyeb Chowdhury from the Zia International Airport (ZIA) under section 54 of the criminal procedure code (CrPC) on November 29, 2003 while he was going to attend a conference in Israel.

Police also seized an anti-Islamic script prepared for addressing a conference titled ‘Education towards culture of peace” from his possession.

The script mentioned that different Islami militant organizations including Al-Qaeda are active in Bangladesh and youths are being trained in Bangladeshi madrasas to fight for Osama-bin-Laden.
