Police under Special Powers Act arrested four teenagers allegedly over Cumilla train derailment after a case was filed on Monday.
Liton Chakma, Railway PW filed the case at Laksam Railway Police Station as the plaintiff.
Laksam Railway Police Station officer-in-charge Murad Ullah Bahar confirmed the matter today (March 20).
He said the arrestees were identified as Kazi Samir, 15, son of Kazi Amir Hossain, Qazi Al Amin, 15, son of Qazi Abul Kasem of the same village, Abu Hanif's son Shakibul Hasan Fahim, 14, and Abdullah Al Mamun Jihad, son of Abdul Malek, 13. They all hail from the same village of the district’s Teligram village in Chouddagram Upazila.
On Monday night Railway authorities filed a case at Laksam Railway Police Station against the four under Special Powers Act. Later, they were arrested conducting a drive, said OC Bahar.
He said earlier teenagers were wandering around the rail track. After locals noticed that, they dispersed the unified teenagers from that area. Immediately after that nine coaches of ‘Bijoy Express’ moving from Chattogram to Jamalpur derailed.
However, the arrested teenagers left their school bag at the incident scene, from which three bearing plates and birth certificates were recovered, he said.
The officer said the incident may have occurred due to dismantling fishplate of the rail track.
The four arrestees have been sent to jail through the court, the official added.
At least eight compartments of Jamalpur-bound ‘Bijoy Express’ train derailed in Cumilla on Sunday (March 17).
The incident happened near Hasanpur Railway Station at Nangalkot upazila of the district.
Liaquat Ali Mazumder, Senior Assistant Engineer (Roads) of Railway Cumilla confirmed the matter.
