Chennai cop sneaks into Bangladesh, arrested

A special sub-inspector of police attached to Selaiyur police station in Chennai was arrested by Bangladesh police when he sneaked into the neighbouring country through the porous borders.

The arrested SSI has been identified as John Selvaraj who is a native of Trichy. An officer at the Tambaram commissionerate said it was not clear why Selvaraj had gone to Bangladesh and whether he was alone or not.

The officer said, "John Selvaraj took two days leave to attend a marriage function in the family of a retired police officer. He went on leave from March 19. He sought 12 days medical leave through post."

The officer, who had served with Selvaraj in Trichy, said, "He worked as a police vehicle driver from 2004 to 2009. Then he deserted from the service from 2009 to 2019. During this period, he lived in Singapore. However, he was reinstated in the police department, and he got his promotion as an SSI. He was later posted in the Tambaram commissionerate."

Selvaraj had gone on 60 days medical leave a few months ago, said another officer.
