150 shops gutted in Narayanganj kitchen market fire

About 150 shops at a market in Rupganj, Narayanganj were gutted by a fire that broke out in the early hours of Sunday (March 24).

Shops at the market sold vegetables, groceries, auto parts and vehicle fuels.

Ten firefighting units brought the blaze under control after more than three hours of efforts.

Fakhruddin Ahmad, deputy assistant director of Narayanganj fire service, confirmed that the fire was tamed at around 7am Sunday. The fire was first reported at 3.35am Sunday and the first firefighting unit reached the spot at 3.50am.

There were no reports of casualties, but at least 150 shops were razed, Fakhruddin told Daily Sun.

The market hosted shops for selling octane and other fuels, which could have played a major part in fuelling the fire.

The famous Gawsia clothes market is adjacent to the kitchen market, but luckily escaped the blaze. The clothes market is now teeming with garments to attract Eid shoppers, and spread of the fire into its boundaries could have caused major damages.

However, the cause of the fire could not be known immediately.
