A Bangladeshi national was shot dead and two others were injured in a firing by India's Border Security Force (BSF) along Burirhat border area at Kaliganj upazila in Lalmonirhat on Friday night.
The incident happened at the frontier near border pillar number 913 on Friday midnight.
The deceased was identified as Muruli Chandra, 43, son of Sushil Chandra, a resident of Uttar Balapara area under Chandrapur union in the upazila. He was a farmer by profession.
Meanwhile, the injured are Liton Mia, 43, son of Nur Islam, and Mizanur Rahman, 33, son of Azimul Haque, of the same area.
According to locals, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and police said that a patrolling team of BSF Battalion-75 Chitrakot camp under Sitai Police Station in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal opened fire on 10-12 Bangladeshis, including Murali Chandra, when they infiltrated to India to smuggle cattle.
Three Bangladeshis were shot at that time, they said, adding among them, Murali Chandra died when he was being taken to Rangpur for treatment.
Kaliganj Police Station officer-in-charge Imtiaz Kabir said they have recovered the bullet-hit body of Murali Chandra Barman and sent it to Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
