Graft allegation against Benazir should be investigated: TIB

Any allegation of corruption against former inspector general of police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed should be thoroughly investigated, considering his past significant position within the government, said Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman.

“It is surprising that Benazir Ahmed owns so much wealth,” Iftekharuzzaman said.

“It is impossible to attain so much wealth in any legal way, no matter what level of government anybody works for,” he said.

The sources of wealth disproportionate to his legitimate income must be identified, he stressed, adding that all ministries and government departments concerned, including the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), should investigate such allegations, maintaining utmost transparency and accountability.

“The entire picture of his corruption should be exposed. Because the law is equal for all,” Iftekharuzzaman further said.

He also said that the former IGP, Benazir, was very powerful. He held the highest rank in the police force. Apart from this, he enjoyed huge backing from political leaders. Hence, the ACC may face obstacles in independently investigating his corruption. However, the people are keen to see the truth; Benazir’s alleged corruption should be found out.

The TIB executive director said, “The 2024 election manifesto of the current government strongly emphasises impounding the assets of those who illegally amass wealth and bringing perpetrators involved in corrupt practices to justice.”

It would be unfortunate if the ACC continues to face obstacles in investigating Benazir’s assets and uncovering any corruption allegations against him, he said, adding that failure to act on such cases would render the government’s election promises hollow and devoid of substance.
