A fire that broke out at a jute mill in Khulna’s Rupsa upazila on Wednesday (April 3) afternoon, was brought under control at night.

The fire broke out in warehouse number 3 of Salam Jute Mill located in Jabusa area around 5:30 pm.

MMA Salam, proprietor of Salam Jute Mill, said that the products produced in three warehouses were 750 tons, estimated value of Tk10.50 crore and raw jute was 1300 tons, estimated value of Tk20 crore. Besides, many other items including machinery were in the warehouse

He said, in total, there has been damage of around Tk100 crore.

He complained that fire service personnel are not working sincerely. They tried to douse the fire from outside without entering inside the room.

Assistant Director of Fire Service and Civil Defense Khulna Farooq Hossain Shikder said the fire service is trying its best to douse the fire. There is no firefighting system in the establishment. As a result, they have to face problems.

Manager of Salam Jute Mill, Bashir Ahmed, said that the fire started following a short circuit due to a mechanical fault in a machine no one located in warehouse No 3. Within a short time, the fire spread to warehouses No 2 and No 1.
