Eid-ul-Fitr date to be confirmed today

The National Moon Sighting Committee is set to convene a meeting this evening (Apr 9) to determine the date of the holy Eid-ul-Fitr.

The president of the committee and religious affairs minister, Md Faridul Haque Khan, will preside over the meeting.

Eid-ul-Fitr, the biggest religious festival of Muslims, is celebrated on 1 Shawwal after a month of fasting.

If the moon is not sighted today, the month of Ramadan will complete 30 days on Wednesday. In that case, Eid will be celebrated on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia will observe Eid-ul-Fitr on Wednesday as the Shawwal crescent was not sighted Monday, reports Gulf news.

This time, 10-12 April has been declared as government holidays for Eid-ul-Fitr. The following day, April 13, will be a weekly holiday.

This will be followed by April 14, a public holiday for Pahela Baishakh (the Bengali New Year). So, government employees will get five days of Eid holidays.

This year, newspaper offices will remain closed for six days from April 9 to April 14. Newspapers will not be published from April 10 to April 15.
