The homebound rush ahead of the Eid ul-Fitr holidays has led to a significant rise in traffic on the Bangabandhu Bridge, resulting in a surge in their toll collection.
Within a span of 24 hours - till Tuesday morning, the toll collection of the Bangabandhu Bridge reached Tk 3,03,66,850, the bridge authority sources said.
In the last 24 hours, 43,427 vehicles crossed the bridge in the last 24 hours more than twice the normal number of vehicles have passed over this bridge.
Ahsanul Kabir Pavel, executive engineer of the Bangabandhu Bridge Site Office, confirmed the matter.
He said in the last 24 hours, the number of vehicles is increasing on the Bangabandhu bridge as the government holiday for Eid-ul-Fitr commencing Wednesday.
However, vehicular movement on the highway remained normal even though there were long queues of vehicles at the toll booths.
Meanwhile, a significant number of motorcycles were seen on the highway, as many commuters opted for two-wheelers to reach their destinations ahead of the anticipated rush of homebound travellers.
