MYMENSINGH: Three death-row convicted members of Jama`atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) escaped from a prison van in Trishal upazila of the district on Sunday morning.
A police man was killed and two injured when JMB cadres snatched the prisoners at gun-point in a daring attack in broad daylight.
The dead policeman was identified as Atikul Islam but the
names of those injured could not be ascertained immediately.
The injured cops were admitted to Mymensingh Medical
College Hospital.
Sources said that a prison van carrying three convicted JMB men was going to Mymensingh court from Kashimpur central jail at around 10:15am. The van was attacked by JMB cadres who came in two cars. The attackers lobbed bombs at the van and killed a policeman while the convicts made good their escape.
Gazipur District Detective Police (DB) Officer-In charge, Abul Khayer, spoke to banglanews soon after the attack. Banglanews also crosschecked the details with Moinul Huq, police superintendent of Mymensingh.
The convicts who escaped have been identified as Jahidul Islam alias Boma Mizan, Salauddin alias Salehin and Rakib
Hasan.
Police has launched a manhunt to nab the convicts and cadres who attacked the prison van in broad daylight.
