A three-month ban on fishing and tourism in the Sundarbans began today (June 1) to ensure the safe breeding and movement of fish and wild animals.
Forest officials stated that the movement of all types of vessels, including boats and fishing trawlers in the rivers and canals, as well as the entry of fishermen and honey collectors, will be suspended from June 1 to August 31.
No local or foreign tourists will be permitted to enter the forest during this period.
The Forest Department noted that 251 species of fish release their eggs during the monsoon, so fishing will be prohibited in the forest during this time.
Additionally, the ban aims to protect the breeding of 315 species of birds, 35 species of reptiles, and 42 types of mammals.
Authorities believe that the operation of water vehicles could disrupt the breeding of fish and various animal species due to the noise.
No tourists will be allowed to visit the country's only wildlife breeding center, 'Karamjal Wildlife Breeding Centre,' or the 11 other tourist spots.
Hawlader Azad Kabir, in charge of the Karamjal Breeding Centre, said the government implemented the ban, prioritizing forest beautification and safe breeding of fish and animals over revenue generation.
He warned that strict action would be taken against those who violate the restrictions.
Previously, forest officials recovered 127 deer and four wild boar carcasses from different areas of the Sundarbans following the super cyclone 'Remal,' according to Mihir Kumar Doe, conservator of the Forest (CF) department in Khulna circle.
The storm caused extensive damage to infrastructure, large trawlers, and numerous trees, washed away water basins, and introduced saline water into over 80 freshwater ponds, destroying habitats for wild animals, he added.
