The United States Embassy in Dhaka will be closed to the general public today due to escalating student protests demanding quota reform in government jobs and reports of violent clashes throughout Bangladesh.
In a notice on its website, the embassy stated that the student protests against government job quotas have intensified in recent days, with violent clashes reported in Dhaka, its surrounding areas, and other cities.
The notice reported, "Several deaths and hundreds of injuries have been reported across Bangladesh. The situation is highly volatile."
The protests are expected to disrupt local transportation services, making it difficult to enter or exit Dhaka.
The U.S. mission advised, "U.S. citizens should remain vigilant and reconsider travel plans, especially to areas near public universities. Avoid demonstrations and exercise caution around large gatherings. Review personal security plans, stay aware of your surroundings and local events, and monitor local news for updates."
