The journalist community leaders on Saturday raised their voices equivocally demanding the cancelation of all controversial laws against the freedom of the press, including the Cyber Security Act 2023.

They also urged the authorities concerned to expedite justice in the long-pending Sagar-Runi murder case and to enact a law that ensures the overall protection of the journalists.

The journalist leaders made the demands while addressing a rally held in front of the national press club in Dhaka on Saturday.     

Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) organised the rally presided over by DUJ President Shahidul Islam.

They also expressed their strong condemnation and protest to the fake and fabricated news published in different media implicating them with motivated incidents.

An announcement also came from the rally on forming a three-member probe body to investigate the matter.

Freedom Fighter Ruhul Amin Gazi, president of the BFUJ, its Secretary General Kader Gani Chowdhury, Abdul Hai Shikdar, former DUJ president, also an adviser of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, Mostafa Kamal Majumdar, former editor of The New Nation, DUJ General Secretary Khurshid Alam, Syed Abdal Ahmed, former general secretary of the National Press Club, among others, addressed rally.         

Pointing the finger at the ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, BFUJ President Ruhul Amin said no one will be allowed to destroy the country’s democracy.

“Bangladesh takes a fresh birth through the student-people movement and you (Hasina) cannot foil the achievement of the movement,” said the journalist leader.
