A Chattogram court on Wednesday (April 23) sentenced a 23-year-old man to life imprisonment for raping a 16-year-old girl in Bhujpur, Fatikchhari.

The verdict was delivered by Judge Ferdous Ara of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-7.

The convict, Khokon Uddin, son of deceased Sirajul Islam from Nabin Adarsha Gram, was also fined Tk 1 lakh. In default, he will serve an additional year in rigorous imprisonment.

According to Tribunal Bench Assistant Kofil Uddin, the prosecution proved the charges with the testimony of seven witnesses.

Khokon was present during the verdict and was sent to jail following the court order.

According to case documents, on May 9, 2023, Khokon lured the teenage girl, his neighbour, to his house by saying her mother was calling her. Finding no one at home, the girl attempted to leave, but Khokon stopped her and raped her.

The victim’s father filed a case with Bhujpur Police Station. After investigation, police submitted a charge sheet, and the court framed charges on January 4, 2024, starting the trial process.
