Bail hearing for Chinmoy Krishna deferred one week

The High Court (HC) has postponed the hearing on the bail rule of Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, spokesperson of the Bangladesh Sammilito Sanatani Jagaran Jote, for one week in a sedition case filed over alleged desecration of the national flag.

The bench of Justice Md Ataur Rahman and Justice Md Ali Reza passed the order on Wednesday (April 23) following a time plea from the state side.

Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman represented the state while lawyer Apurba Kumar Bhattacharya appeared for the accused.

On October 31 last year, Firoz Khan, general secretary of Chandgaon Mohora Ward BNP, filed the sedition case with Kotwali Police Station against Chinmoy Krishna Das and 18 others. Several accused, including Chinmoy Krishna, were later arrested.

Following the rejection of his bail plea, violence broke out on November 26 last year at the Chattogram court premises. During the unrest, lawyer Saiful Islam was beaten and hacked to death. Police have arrested around two dozen people in connection with the incident.

On January 2 this year, Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court rejected Chinmoy Krishna’s bail application. A fresh bail plea was then filed with the High Court.

Later on February 4, the High Court issued a rule asking why Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari should not be granted bail in the sedition case over alleged national flag desecration.
