Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, Adviser to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, has publicly apologised over a contractor license issued in his father’s name and confirmed that the license has since been cancelled.
In a Facebook post made around 11:30am on Thursday, Asif acknowledged the matter after it was reported in the media.
He wrote, “First, I apologise for my father’s mistake.”
He said a journalist had called him the previous night to inquire about a contractor licence issued in his father's name. After confirming the matter with his father, he informed the journalist that the licence had been issued by the District Executive Engineer’s office.
Explaining the situation further, he said his father, the headmaster of Akubpur Yakub Ali Bhuiyan Public High School, had taken the license based on the advice of a local contractor who wanted to use his name to apply for work. Asif acknowledged that while any citizen can obtain a license for business purposes, it was clearly a conflict of interest given his position at the ministry.
He said that once his father understood the issue, he applied to cancel the license, which has now been officially withdrawn. He also noted that no work had been applied for using the license during the interim period.
Asif concluded his statement by saying, “Perhaps my father did not understand the conflict of interest involved, so I sincerely apologise on his behalf.”
