Australia urges free, fair election in Bangladesh

Australia has expressed its expectation for a free and fair 13th National Parliamentary Election in Bangladesh.

Australian High Commissioner Susan Reilly made the statement on Thursday (April 24) following a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A.M.M. Nasir Uddin at the Election Commission headquarters in Dhaka.

“We thank the Chief Election Commissioner for taking the time to meet with us. We learned about the preparations for Bangladesh’s upcoming election, Reilly said.

Australia hopes to see a free and fair election. It was a very productive meeting, and Australia is interested in supporting the Election Commission in specific areas,” she added.

Previously, diplomats from several other countries have also met with the Election Commission, calling for transparent elections and offering various forms of electoral support.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is also assisting the Commission by providing election materials.

The Election Commission is currently working towards holding the national election between December 2025 and June 2026.
