4 killed in lightning strike in Cumilla

Four people were killed in lightning strikes in two upazilas of Comilla on Monday (April 28) morning.

The incident took place in Barura and Muradnagar upazillas around 11:30 am.

Two schoolchildren were killed in a lightning strike in Payalgachha village of Khoshbas union in Barura upazila. They are Fahad Hossain (13), son of the late Khokon Mia of Payalgachha village, and Saymon Hossain (13), grandson of Abdul Barek Mia. Both are students of class 6 of Baraharipur High School.

Eyewitnesses said that despite the light clouds in the afternoon, the children were busy flying kites in the field. Suddenly, lightning struck the two students and seriously injured them.

Locals quickly rescued them and took them to the hospital, where doctors declared both of them dead.

Barura Upazila Executive Officer Nu Mong Marma Mong confirmed the deaths in the lightning strike.

On the other hand, two farmers were killed in a lightning strike while working on agricultural land in Muradnagar. Three more were injured during the incident. It is reported that the injured have lost their hearing after the incident.

The deceased are Nikhil Chandra Debnath, son of Bircharan Debnath of Korbanpur village under Bangra Bazar police station, and Jewel Bhuiyan, son of Jasim Uddin Bhuiyan of Deora village in Andikut Union.

According to local sources, farmers Nikhil and Jewel went to work on the land to harvest paddy. Suddenly, the weather deteriorated and lightning started, and they met with an accident.

Bangra Bazar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mahfuzur Rahman said that the death of two people in a lightning strike in Korbanpur village while they were doing agricultural work has been confirmed.

Their bodies have been handed over to their families, he added.
