Ex-DU VCs, 11 others sued over 2018 attack

Two former vice-chancellors of Dhaka University (DU), along with 11 others including ruling party leaders and ex-student leaders, have been sued over the 2018 attack and vandalism at the DU vice-chancellor’s residence during the quota reform movement.

Rashed Khan, current General Secretary of Gono Odhikar Parishad and one of the key organisers of the quota reform movement, filed the case with Shahbagh Police Station on Sunday (May 4) afternoon.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shahbagh Police Station Khalid Mansoor confirmed matter.

According to case statement, former DU vice-chancellor Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman has been named as the prime accused. 

Former proctor Prof Golam Rabbani, Awami League presidium member Jahangir Kabir Nanak, organisational secretary Enamul Haque Shamim, banned organisation Chhatra League’s former central president Saifur Rahman Sohag, former general secretary SM Zakir Hossain, DU unit’s former president Abid Al Hasan and former general secretary Motahar Hossain Prince, former central president Al Nahian Khan Joy, former DU teacher leader and later VC Prof ASM Maksud Kamal, and former pro-VC Prof Muhammad Abdus Samad, also named in the case.

Around 500 unnamed activists of Chhatra League were also accused in the case.

Rashed Khan said the case relates to the night of April 9, 2018, when youths wearing t-shirts marked “Dhaka College Chhatra League” broke into the VC’s residence, vandalised the property and set fire to parts of the building.

He said that during the Awami League government, they had tried to file a case earlier but police did not accept it.

Rashed demanded that the real culprits behind the attack and arson be identified.
