Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has emphasized the urgent need to upgrade Chattogram Port, calling it the heart of the country's economy and a crucial gateway for future investment and expansion.
Speaking at a meeting at the NCT-5 premises inside the port today, Yunus underscored the importance of modernizing infrastructure to enhance the port’s capacity and strengthen the nation’s economy.
“If adequate port facilities are ensured, investors will come,” he stated, highlighting the role of international trade in Bangladesh’s economic development.
The discussion was attended by Shipping Adviser Brigadier General (retd) M Sakhawat Hussain and Chittagong Port Authority Chairman Rear Admiral SM Moniruzzaman, who also addressed the challenges facing the port.
Yunus stressed that Chattogram must evolve into one of the world's leading ports to accelerate Bangladesh’s economic transformation.
“To boost the port’s efficiency, its management should be handed over to the world’s top port operators,” he suggested, adding that such a move would introduce cutting-edge technology and generate new employment opportunities for Bangladeshis.
The Chief Adviser described Chattogram Port as too small for Bangladesh’s growing trade demands, insisting that its expansion was imperative.
“Without modernizing the port, it is impossible to transform the country’s economy,” he asserted.
During his visit, Yunus toured various sections of the port to observe ongoing operations firsthand.
His arrival in Chattogram marked his first visit to his hometown since assuming office as the head of the interim government.
