Formal charges filed over Chankharpul killings during July uprising International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)

The prosecution team of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has officially submitted charges in a case related to crimes against humanity over the killing of six people in Dhaka’s Chankharpul area on August 5, 2024.

This is the first formal charge filed by the ICT concerning the July Mass Uprising incidents. Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim confirmed that Chief Prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam submitted the charges at the ICT Registrar’s office around noon today.

Eight people have been accused in the case, including former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman. The others are former Joint Commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakraborty, ex-Additional Deputy Commissioner Shah Alam Mohammad Akhtarul Islam, former Ramna Zone Assistant Commissioner Mohammad Imrul, ex-Inspector (Operations) Arshad Hossain, and constables Sujon, Imaz Hossain, and Nasirul Islam.

The victims, who lost their lives in Chankharpul on that day, were identified as Shahriar Khan Anas, Sheikh Mahdi Hasan Zunayed, Md Yakub, Md Rakib Hawlader, Md Ismamul Haque, and Manik Miah.

The ICT’s investigation agency had submitted a detailed 90-page report on April 20 after over six months of investigation. The report includes testimony from 79 witnesses, 19 video clips, 11 newspaper articles, two audio files, 11 publications, and six death certificates.

Earlier, on April 22, the tribunal’s first panel (ICT-1) set today as the deadline for submitting the report, following a four-week extension requested by the prosecution.
