Holy Ashura being observed today

Muslims across Bangladesh are observing Holy Ashura today with solemn religious fervor, commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), who was killed in the historic Battle of Karbala.

The day, the 10th of Muharram in the Islamic lunar calendar, is a public holiday in Bangladesh and holds profound significance for Muslims around the world, particularly for the Shia community.

It marks a tragic yet inspirational chapter in Islamic history — the martyrdom of Imam Hossain (RA) and his 72 companions in 680 AD in the desert of Karbala, present-day Iraq.

Imam Hossain’s stand against injustice and tyranny, and his ultimate sacrifice for truth and righteousness, remains a powerful symbol of resistance for Muslims globally. His martyrdom is mourned and honoured as an enduring legacy of courage, faith, and moral integrity.

In a message on the eve of Ashura, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus paid deep tribute to Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA) and the martyrs of Karbala.

“Holy Ashura is a mournful, significant, and glorious day for the Muslim Ummah,” he said. “I extend my deepest respects to Imam Hossain (RA), the beloved grandson of our Prophet (PBUH), and to all who laid down their lives for justice in Karbala.”

Security Measures in the Capital
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has implemented heightened security measures across the capital to ensure peaceful observance of the day.

Key areas including Hussaini Dalan, Boro Katara, Mohammadpur Bihari Camp, Bibika Rauza, Mirpur Pallabi Bihari Camp, and other significant Shia religious sites have been brought under CCTV surveillance, with special DMP units on standby to respond to any emergencies.

The largest Tazia procession is scheduled to begin at 10:00 am from Gate No. 1 of Hussaini Dalan. It will move through major city thoroughfares, including Bakshibazar Lane, Shaheed Minar Road, Azimpur intersection, Nilkhet, and Dhaka College, before concluding at Dhanmondi Lake Karbala.

The DMP has urged city residents to use alternative routes to avoid congestion during the procession.

Nationwide Programmes
Special prayers and discussions highlighting the spiritual significance of Ashura are being held in mosques and religious institutions across the country.

The Islamic Foundation will host a special doa mahfil and discussion on the “Importance and Significance of Holy Ashura” at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque at 1:30 pm today.

Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television, and private TV channels are airing special programmes, while print and online media outlets have published special supplements to mark the occasion.
