All Superintendents of Police (SPs) and Officers-in-Charge (OCs) across the country will be transferred through a lottery system ahead of the upcoming 13th national parliamentary election, Home Affairs Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury announced on Wednesday (Aug 6).
Speaking to journalists following a meeting at the Ministry of Home Affairs in Dhaka, the adviser said the decision is part of preparations to ensure a free, fair, and credible election.
The meeting, held in the ministry’s conference room, focused on logistical planning and operational strategies for law enforcement agencies to maintain order during the electoral period.
Referring to the Chief Adviser’s recent address to the nation, Chowdhury said, “The election preparation process has already begun, as the Chief Adviser outlined yesterday. Today's discussion followed that directive, particularly focusing on the logistical support required for election-time operations.”
He emphasised the critical roles that deputy commissioners (DCs), SPs, upazila nirbahi officers (UNOs), and OCs play during elections, saying that candidates often try to influence postings in their constituencies.
“This time, we have decided to conduct the transfers of SPs and OCs in full transparency. The lottery will be held in front of the media to ensure impartiality,” the adviser added.
