Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has hinted that the election schedule may be announced in December.
He said the schedule will be declared two months before the polling date.
CEC made the remarks during an unscheduled press briefing on Wednesday (August 6) at his office in the Election Commission (EC) building in the capital.
Earlier, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus announced in his nationwide address that the Election Commission would receive an official letter soon regarding polls preparation before Ramadan in February 2026.
Nasir Uddin said, “The Chief Adviser yesterday made an announcement. He said he will send us a letter soon for holding elections in early February, before Ramadan. Although we have not received the letter yet, I believe it will reach us very soon. We are continuing our preparations accordingly.”
“Despite the challenges, we are progressing with preparations. InshaAllah, there will be no shortfall in our efforts,” he said.
Replying to a question about the schedule, the CEC said, “We will declare the schedule two months before the polling date. Let us first receive the letter, then we will sit for discussion, fix a polling date, and then announce the schedule accordingly.”
At this time CEC expressed confidence that the electoral environment would continue to improve over the next few months.
“At present, I do not see any major problems. The law and order situation has significantly improved. Our main challenge is to regain public trust, earn the confidence of political parties, and ensure high voter turnout,” he said.
Regarding the Commission’s key tasks, CEC said that the draft updated voter list has already been published and will be finalised by 31 August.
Highlighting transparency, he said, “We want to make this election as transparent as possible—like a mirror. Let the people and the world see that we are leaving no stone unturned in our efforts. We do not want to do anything behind closed doors.”
“We are also preparing for the postal ballots of law enforcement and polling officers. This time, we will try to bring around 10 lakh personnel under the postal ballot system. Journalists were not aware of this; now you are,” CEC added.
