Kamrangirchar residents want inclusion in Dhaka-2 constituency

Residents have demanded that Kamrangirchar police station, including wards 55, 56 and 57 under its jurisdiction, remain within Dhaka-2 constituency.

They raised the demand on Tuesday following a hearing on parliamentary constituencies at the Election Commission in the capital.

Advocate Nure Alam Siddiqui Sohag said the commission, in its proposed redistricting, had separated the three wards from Dhaka-2, attaching ward 55 to Dhaka-10 and wards 56 and 57 to Dhaka-7. After the notification was issued, a total of 59 appeals were filed, of which 57 opposed the changes while only two supported them.

He said the people of Kamrangirchar want wards 55, 56 and 57 to remain within Dhaka-2. “Dhaka-2 constituency consists only of Kamrangirchar police station, while the rest is made up of several unions of Keraniganj and Savar upazilas. If these three wards are excluded, there will be no police station left within Dhaka-2,” he added.

Sohag further said the residents of Kamrangirchar are connected to Keraniganj for agriculture, business, offices and courts. He stressed that Dhaka-2 should continue to comprise the six to seven unions of Keraniganj, some unions of Savar, and wards 55, 56 and 57 of Kamrangirchar police station, which is the united demand of the people of Kamrangirchar and Dhaka-2 constituency.
