DHAKA: The government will generate an additional 700MW power to meet the increased demand during the holy month of Ramadan.

Prime minister’s adviser for energy Dr. Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury told journalists about the development following a meeting on improving power scenario held at the secretariat Wednesday.

At present, the country generates 3,800MW. During the time of Sehri, the demand usually stands around 4,600MW and during the peak hour, the demand stands out 5,200MW.

The additional generation would require around 8000mcft gas, he said.

He said smooth distribution of electricity will be ensured through repair of equipments like transformers.

Dr. Towfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury said double connections will be provided to mosques in Dhaka.

He, however, requested the wealthy men and the Mosque committees to take initiatives for using solar power in the mosques.

About load shedding at midnight, the adviser said owners of some industries operate their units at night that rise demand in the peak hour.

On shutting shopping malls and shops after 8 pm, Dr. Chowdhury said he will sit with shop owners on Wednesday for a further decision.

Energy secretary Mohammad Mesbahuddin, power secretary Abul Kalam Azad, Chairman of Petrobangla Dr. Hossain Mansur and other high officials were present.
